Rat TrapsThere are many different methods of rat control available. Deciding on the best pest control method for you is dependent on the extent of your infestation and your location. There are several different areas that need to be taken care of in order for proper rat control.  There are sanitation methods to begin indoor and outdoor rat control. Then there are several ways that you can control their actual habitats by physical barrier control methods, mechanical, and chemical methods. A combination of these methods is usually best.

When trying to conquer indoor and or outdoor rat control, basic rodent pest control begins with taking care of your garbage and organic debris. As strange as that may sound, rats are omnivorous and will eat anything that they can find.  You need to carefully dispose of your organic wastes and anything that they may want to eat. Choose a garbage can that is made of metal or very hard plastic (one that they cannot bite through), and it should also contain a sealable lid. Metal lids can be secured by attaching an elastic cord to the top. It may also help to elevate your garbage can onto a rack so that they cannot be tipped over by dogs or other wildlife.  It’s also a good idea to store your pet food in a rat proof container as well. If you have a garden, make sure that you dispose of any rotten produce. Rats feed off of this as well.

Controlling the rats’ habitat is also a key in effective rodent control and prevention. Rats dwell in heavy, thick vegetation. Keep your lawn manicured and your flower beds trimmed. Avoid thick, tall bushes and vegetation. Keep the yard free of debris and junk that they might hide and make nests in. You will also want to trim your trees away from your roof. Roof rats are incredible leapers and can fall safely from a great height.

After you have taken care of all of the indoor and outdoor sanitation methods of controlling rats, it is important to keep them out as well.  Make sure that you seal all cracks and door sills to keep them from coming inside. Prevent them from entering vents by using wire cloth and drain covers. They can squeeze through anything that they can stick their head through, so make sure that every crack is filled.

You can mechanically control rats with rat traps. There are various types such as glue, electric, snap, and chemical rat bait stations which can be used with pesticides or without. Each of these methods work well in different situations, and a combination of them is usually your best option. Snap rat traps are the oldest and most widely used form and they must be baited. It is sometimes best to bait them and not set them a few nights to make sure that the rats are taking the bait. More is better with rat traps, so it is best to set out quite a few in the various rat activity places. When using a glue tap, make sure that you seal them to the floor or the rat may move them away with itself.  If you are using a  for rat control, seek advice from a do it yourself pest control company as to the best methods and products for your situation.
