Raccoon Traps

Raccoon traps may be required if you find yourself dealing with a raccoon who has claimed your home as her own.  They can be extremely destructive, and quite dangerous to your family and pets. Once you have detected them on your property, it is imperative to find the quickest and most effective deterrent to remove them permanently. In combination with critter repellents, a raccoon trap is your best pest control option.

Raccoons are quite large animals, weighing in at as much as 50 pounds, and measuring up to three feet long. Their thick furred bodies are generally gray, and display well known markings of rings around their tails and a dark mask around their eyes.  Despite their hefty size, they are quite sneaky and very intelligent.  They typically mate during the winter months, having a new litter each spring. They are not particular eaters and will go to great lengths in search of food. Overturning garbage cans and climbing through pet doors to get to any food source is very common.  Similarly, when in search of shelter for themselves and their offspring, these wild animals will do whatever it takes to find the ideal den-like structure to call home. Their regular habitat is in the forests and near water, but they will adapt quickly to the environment they find themselves in. They are known for moving into attics, crawlspaces, barns, and roof overhangs.

The damage they are capable of can be harmful to your family and pets, as well as being extremely costly. Depending on where they settle in, you may end up with damage to your yard, or even your home itself. In addition, they can transmit rabies and other diseases to those they come in contact with. It is important to be proactive and to rid your property of these creatures as soon as they have been detected.

While there are a number of homemade repellents that can be used, raccoon traps may be the most successful option. Laws in your area must first be visited to ensure that trapping is allowed. These critters are not easily scared away by lights and noise, so a raccoon trap must be placed in a well covered path they are known to frequent.  This should be done in the fall or early spring to increase its success as they are more desperate for the bait you set in or near the cage at this time. The bait can be just about anything because of their open-minded appetites. Once caught, the animal should be relocated as far from your property as possible since they can easily find their way back.

When combined with other pest control techniques, raccoon traps can be extremely effective at catching them so you can safely remove them from your home. Some additional measures that should be taken include keeping the garbage sealed up tightly, locking pet doors at night, keeping food out of sight, and repairing any holes in your fencing and home structure. This should stop the possibility of these and other unwanted pests from venturing onto your property in the first place. If you are losing the battle for your home with a family of raccoons, consult with a do it yourself pest control company for the most effective methods of dealing with these squatters in your area. They can also help you with rodent control and any other pest control problems you may have.
