Gophers and Moles: Lawn Destroyers

If you are seeing pests such as gophers and moles, you more than likely are having some issues. Gophers and moles are not easy to get rid of; in fact they can be extremely difficult to get rid of. There are ways to keep them away from your home, your garden and any other part you wish to keep them away from. These two can be huge pests. It is no wonder that most individuals do not want them around their home, in their yard or near their garden. There are ways in which to keep them away; however there is going to be some work on your part in order for this to occur.

The first thing you need to know is that gophers and moles like to eat roots, tubers and other vegetation. If you have a garden or any sort of vegetation in your front of back yard, you will more than likely see either one of these animals, if not both of them. Once you see one of them, you know that you have a problem. If it is possible, try not to attract these animals with the food that they like to eat most; however sometimes that is not possible.

Gophers and moles like to be underground, so if they are particularly prone to an area in your yard, fencing it off is the first step. You need to dig a ditch around the area that you want tapered off and put chicken wire into the ditch. Although there are times when this is successful and when it is not, this is one place to start. Fencing off the area you want to be protected can be very successful, do keep in mind that these two animals can burrow themselves deep so you may have to dig deeper or have a tall fence so they cannot climb it.

The other option to get rid or gophers and moles are to flood their tunnels and burrows. Always make sure when you dig to reach their burrows and tunnels that they are still active. You will need to use a hose and let the water run for a good fifteen to twenty minutes. Keep in mind as well, that some of the time these tunnels and burrows can be large and wide so it may take a bit longer before they are full of water. These animals will be forced out and have to find somewhere else to stay.

Scaring them is also another option if you have the chance. Gophers and moles are frightened of people even though they can be such pests. If you see one out from under ground, run after it and scare it. If you scare it enough there is a chance that it will not want to come back or be too afraid to be around your home. Be patient. Getting rid of the pests does take some time and effort and are not the easiest of pests to get rid of.
